Impact of amber weather warning on waste services in Aberdeenshire

by rosemarybruce on 4 February, 2021

Councillors have received the following update:

Given that council resources will be focused on keeping roads to vaccination centres open, the amber weather warning over the next couple of days will have an impact on the provision of waste services in Aberdeenshire as follows:

1. Recycling centres:

• Recycling centres in Banchory, Huntly, Inverurie, Laurencekirk, Stonehaven, Turriff and Westhill will close at 3pm today.
• Recycling centres in Ellon, Fraserburgh, Macduff, Peterhead and Portlethen will remain open on Friday and Saturday, all other recycling centres will be closed.
• The situation will be reviewed on Saturday regarding which centres may be able to open on Sunday and updates will be provided through social media – this will depend on the weather forecast for Sunday and our ability to clear the snow accumulated so far.
• Bookings have been cancelled and those affected are being notified by email.
• The usual lockdown advice applies – whilst recycling centres have remained open for essential use, please only visit a recycling centre if it is absolutely necessary.

2. Bin collections:

• Bins on some rural routes in the amber weather warning area will not be emptied on Friday.
• Notifications to those affected will be issued through the myAberdeenshire app. Please remember to switch on bin notifications on the app to receive updates.
• Unfortunately we will not be able to come back at a later date and empty the bins missed.
• Where we have missed a bin due to adverse weather, we will collect additional waste/recycling at the next scheduled collection for that bin. Please keep the crews safe by putting any additional recycling into a cardboard box or a clear bag, so crews can easily see it is recycling without opening bags.

The arrangements may change depending on circumtances locally – for further updates, please keep an eye on our Facebook page (@AberdeenshireRecycling) and sign up for bin notifications on the myAberdeenshire app.
